IIn a state that ranks third from last in literacy, Victoria is challenged to build the level of education of adults, families and children in the community. Last year the Victoria Adult Literacy Council (VALC) served over 350 students who attended over 14,910 class hours towards their GED, English Second Language, Job Readiness, and literacy development. Research shows, people who seek literacy development are more likely to have better self-esteem, improved health and higher wages while breaking the cycle of familial illiteracy. In today’s job market, literacy skills are absolutely essential.
Due to the educational needs of the Victoria community, the Victoria Advocate led by Jim Bishop launched the very first Knowledge Bowl event in 1993 to support VALC in its efforts to increase literacy in the Victoria area. By supporting the Victoria Adult Literacy Council (VALC) the Victoria Advocate instituted a fundraiser that continues to support adults with free classes. This year’s Knowledge Bowl event is presented by VALC and supported by Rotary Clubs of Victoria. Your sponsorship and attendance of this event helps VALC educate the community of Victoria toward a more literate place to live, work and serve.
